According to Qualcomm, a world leader in next-generation mobile technologies, it is ready to support foldable phones by 2019. The company designs and markets wireless telecommunications products and services and its new chipset, Snapdragon 855, can support the foldable phone idea.
‘We’re ready for foldable phones, and if an OEM wants to introduce a mobile with a Snapdragon 855, awesome”, says Keith Kressin, Qualcomm’s” senior vice president. However, he also mentioned that 5G is the focus for Snapdragon right now and they do not have any specific features when it comes to the foldable phones. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are a must for the Android smartphones these days and to support foldable phones, they may require only a few changes.
Keith Kressin says that the changes required may be display subsystem changes and some GPU changes instead of being processing focused. Any changes in the system on a chip depends on how the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) wants to do the foldable phones.
Samsung is the only OEM that has shown a foldable phone prototype and its not clear whether it will be called Samsung Galaxy X or Galaxy F which is rumored to come out in 2019. Although Samsung uses the Snapdragon chips in most of its smartphones, there has been no confirmation whether it will use the Snapdragon 855 in its foldable smartphone.
Samsung and Qualcomm have worked closely together with Samsung using and also, manufacturing the Snapdragon chips. And similar to Qualcomm, Samsung has decided to wait to comment on the future of foldable smartphones.
